West Lothian Council Logo.

Home 5 guideline 5 Logo

The West Lothian Council logo incorporates a visual element (viaduct and five sisters) plus the words West Lothian Council. Both elements make up the logo and must never be used separately, always together.

The logo is unique and should not be altered in any way. Master digital artwork exists for both colour and mono logos. No attempt must be made to redraw or distort master artwork.

Main WLC logo

Main WLC logo

The main version of the West Lothian Council logo is the one colour green version, and it should be used whenever possible.

WLC Gaelic Logo

Gaelic version of the WLC Logo

All staff should use the Gaelic logo when corresponding with customers on issues relating to the Gaelic Language and/or when communicating with customers in Gaelic.

When placing the logo on a coloured background, you may use the whiteout version, but please ensure there is enough contrast to see it properly.

Correct Logo Examples

If printing in black and white you can use the all-black version, however this version should only be used if printing black and white. The logo can appear on colour, illustration, or photographic backgrounds, so long as the legibility of the logo remains clear.

Incorrect use of the logo

Don’t alter the elements of the logo:

  • Never add the service or team name to the logo
  • Never change the relative position of the elements
  • Never use one element of the logo without the other
  • Never rescale the elements

Don’t change the type:

  • Never add dropshadow
  • Never change the typeface

Don’t alter the colour:

  • Never alter the colour to fit the décor
  • Never change any of the colours

Don’t distort or bend:

  • Never expand
  • Never condense

Tips

Ensure their is space around the logo

An area of clear space should be maintained around the logo at all times.

This space is equal to half the height of the logo. For example, if the logo is produced at 15mm high you must leave a clear space of 7.5mm.

Use correct sizing

To ensure visibility, legibility and accessibility in print reproduction, the logo, wherever possible, should not be used at a width that
is less than 30mm.

Positioning

It is important that the position of the logo is chosen carefully to ensure that it is clearly displayed in a prominent position, and that the rules around the minimum size, clear space and backgrounds are adherred to.
Logo placement

For exhibition and banners the West Lothian Council logo should be placed where it will have the highest impact and visibility.

Partner logo positioning

West Lothian Council may have to be presented as a partner organisation in publications or digitally.

If West Lothian Council is the primary partner the logo should always appear in the bottom right position with partner logos appearing from the bottom left as shown in example one.

If West Lothian Council is an equal partner then it is important to ensure that our logo appears with equal weight as the partner logos in terms of size, placement, colour, etc.

The West Lothian Council logo should also take the primary position on the bottom right hand side, with partner logos following on from the right as shown in the example two.

Other approved logos

A number of approved logos are used on council publications, when appropriate.

These are:

  • Carer Positive
  • Customer Services Excellence
  • Living Wage
  • NHS Lothian
  • Police Scotland
  • West Lothian College
  • West Lothian Leisure
  • West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership

These logos will be used by the Corporate Communications team when designing documents, in accordance with the council’s branding guidelines, as and when it is deemed suitable. They will however not take precedent over the council’s logo or be used as an alternative to the council’s logo. If you have any questions please contact us.

Requests to create a new logo

We are often asked about creating new logos for Council projects, however, no service area has its own logo and no individual team is permitted to have its own logo.

Our hope is that these guidelines give everyone the tools, understanding and knowledge to work with our corporate brand under a one-council approach of cohesive collaboration. Where everything we do is connected and our visual style is consistent. However, we understand some projects might fall on the edges of this, for many reasons. So please get in touch as early as possible so that we can help you find the most appropriate solution.
